Leave entitlements
Statutory leave in India is a mix of central and state rules. The entitlement that most surprises employers from the United States is maternity leave.
- Earned leave
- 1 day / 20 worked
- encashment per company policy
- Casual leave
- 8–12 days
- per year, state-specific
- Sick leave
- 8–12 days
- per year
- Maternity leave
- 26 weeks
- full pay, employer funded
- Public holidays
- 10–14 days
- per year
Earned leave accrues at roughly one day for every twenty worked. Whether untaken leave is encashed on exit, and on what basis, follows the policy the company frames, which is what makes it a balance-sheet item rather than a nicety.
Maternity leave is twenty-six weeks at full pay, funded entirely by the employer. There is no government subsidy. It is considerably more generous than most United States employers provide domestically, and it should be budgeted rather than discovered.
